How-To Practice Self Care

Self-care has become such a buzz word as of late and I am ALL for it! But what does it really mean and how do we put it into practice and is it even important? 

Self-Care is any act we deliberatly do in order to take care of our mental, emotional or physical health. 

A lot of people can feel guilty about self-care because it seems selfish...however, how can we truly honor and serve ourselves and those around us if we are running on empty and feeling stressed and overwhelmed. So often we don't even realize that we are frazzled and out of sorts because we are disconnected with ourselves. We are running around without intentions and barely paying attention to what we need and we wonder why life just isn't going our way. 

One of the simplest places to start is practicing self-care in your life! So let me help you break it down so you can start thinking of some big and small ways to show yourself a little love! 

Macro Self-Care: These are activities or actions that are of high impact but also more expensive or time-consuming, such as, vacations, massages, mani/pedi, retreats, large family or friend dinners and so on. These things are so good for our soul but sometimes harder to do on a regular basis. Though we can usually run off of this energy for much longer than micro self-care actions. 

Micro Self-Care: Smaller activities or actions that are easy to do on a regular basis without costing much money or time, such as, bubble bath, a green juice, cooking a nice dinner, a phone call, a long walk, a sweaty workout class, quiet time or meditation, reading a good book or even just taking a nap! These are things that are available to us on a daily basis and make it easier to feel loved and honored in between some of our macro self-care activities. 

So how do you start prioritizing self-care in your life?

  1. Find out what fills you up from the soul and reenergizes you. These are not things you already do as a checklist throughout your day but something you will intentionally set aside time for to relax and focus on yourself. 
  2. Mark these things down in your calendar! Make a date with yourself and prioritize you! It is easy to let life get in the way but when we set this time aside like we would any appointment it helps us be more protective of canceling or delaying. 
  3. Have a mix of macro and micro! Don't only do small things, plan ahead of a trip or spa day and then in between sprinkle in fun little self-care things along the way! 
  4. Don't feel guilty!!! This is KEY because some people just won't get it. But they don't have to. This is not for them, this is for you. This is because you are worthy of being a priority to yourself and deserve to feel loved and cared for. If we only rely on others to assure and affirm us we risk chasing after someone else's idea of happiness our whole lives. Decide for yourself today what matters to you and make it a priority!
